Wicker Park's Double Door May Close Very Soon

Double Door, the iconic music venue located in the heart of Wicker Park, may be closing its doors in the very near future.

The venue, located at 1570-72 N. Milwaukee Ave., is currently in legal negotiations with the building’s owner. However, recently filed legal documents point to an imminent eviction.

Speedwagon Properties, a downtown investment firm, plans to buy The Double Door. An “affidavit of interest” to buy the building was accepted by its current owner, Brian Strauss, on Dec. 23, according to DNA Info.

Double Door’s lease expired on October 31. The owners of the venue had 180 days to renew their lease for the building prior to this expiration day, but failed to file a renewal.

After the opportunity for renewal passed, the four-story building’s landlord filed a legal complaint requesting a judge to order eviction.

Though Double Door has continued to sell tickets for future shows, the venue has not paid rent since October, according to the lawyer of the building’s owner.

Though unconfirmed, there are rumors that Shake Shack plans to move into the Double Door location.

In 2005, Double Door’s management similarly faced their landlords in court over lease troubles, but reached an agreement for the coming years. The venue has operated since 1994.

As of now, the Double Door has shows scheduled into April and continues to operate as usual.
